Prevenient Grace

Got Questions (gotquestions.org) has a decent explanation of Prevenient Grace. But a couple of things should be noted:

  1. Got Questions does not hold to the doctrine, therefore they use words that lean away from the doctrine;
  2. thus is could have a much richer, thorough analysis, with many more reference passages;
  3. it should also not be labeled “Arminianism” which paints it into an extreme corner by definition;
  4. strict “Arminianism” is defective systematic theology just as is the so called strict “Calvinism.” Every verse in the Bible that teaches salvation is needed to more accurately articulate God’s doctrine of salvation;
  5. truth statements (simple sentences of fact) based on Romans 1-11—alone—will bring one into rejecting both strict Calvinism and Arminianism.

I have only included the parts of the article that I, Monte, agree with. Please click on the link at the bottom for the entire article. I also have edits and redactions, for clarity on what I believe the Bible teaches.

What is Prevenient Grace?

“That is, God is drawing all men in a lesser sense […] . In this position, God has given all men a prevenient grace that results in a universal healing [actively keeping humankind from our capacity] of total depravity by the grace of God through [looking towards and because of] the atoning work of Christ. This, in turn, has alleviated, though not fully, [lessened the intensity of], the corruption of inherited depravity. […] That is, because of the atoning work of Christ, all people are no longer completely incapable of hearing and responding to the Gospel (John 6:44, 8:43) [nor have they ever been; see Romans 1:18-23] ; rather, all people have some ability. However, similar to the other position in classical Arminianism, people are not completely freed from their bondage of sin until the Gospel is presented to them and God calls them internally through its presentation. and they respond.”
